Seeing Double Vision

MDA’s very own, Matthew Toma aka Matthew 1:1 is taking on a new role in the dance music world. Double Vision is the name of his new project, which will be released September 9, 2012.  Toma diversified his background in hip hop to venture into the new realm of trap music.  Many refer to trap as a simple breakdown of 1/3 hip hop, 1/3 dubstep, and 1/3 dub. We asked Toma to fill us in on all things trap.

MDA: What does the term ‘trap music’ mean to you?

Toma: Well I know the true definition of ‘trap’, which came from the ‘trap house’ lifestyle that became very popular in the south with T.I., Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane being at the forefront of the music genre in the early 2000’s. It has now evolved into a genre where both street and electronic dance music cultures organically came together to make it one big sound.

MDA: How do you think trap has transformed dance music? Hip hop?

Toma: I think it has and will continue to transform the genres tremendously. It allows both cultures to come together to enjoy the music and share common interests.

MDA: What were your inspirations in developing this project?

Toma: The inspiration came from my everyday struggle with making the right and wrong decisions. We are in a spiritual war right now and this project will help define my perspective on my personal experiences with good vs evil or better yet heaven vs. hell.

MDA: Do you think this genre will withstand the evolution of music in the next 5 years?

Toma: Yes. It may evolve but the culture and energy will remain.

Double Vision will be available Sunday, September 9, 2012 via for free download and streaming. Features on the project are Tristan Wilds, FKi, Marz Leon, and Zacky T. We encourage you all to have a listen! Cheers.
