Monthly Archives: September 2012

Matt Tolfrey has embarked on his ‘Word of Mouth’ tour this month. Third stop on his route is our very own La Cave in Costa Mesa, California. The origin of his tour name is synonymous to the title of his latest record. Tolfrey describes this release by stating:

“I cannot play the piano and I am not professionally trained in any way musically, but through years of DJing I know exactly what I like, and I have great tracks in my head that need to get out. While searching the Internet for alternate ideas of making music, I came across some amazing software that enables you to simply sing or hum into a mic, which then translates into midi notes, which you then use as the basis of your tracks. In essence, it means that while I am walking the streets, or away travelling, and I come up with an idea for a bassline, or a melody, I can simply record it into my phone, return home, and sing it into the computer. In other words, ‘in theory’ the album is mainly going to be written with my mouth, not my fingers, and then fully realised with the help of engineers and guest vocalists – hence the name ‘Word Of Mouth’.”

Matt Tolfrey is a favorite among the top players in the industry, such as Get Physical, Cocoon, Rekids, Saved, Culprit, and Crosstown Rebels (with whom he launched his debut album in 2005). We can’t wait to see Tolfrey live tomorrow night (September 12, 2012) alongside fellow UK Ambassador, Gavin Herlihy!

Gavin Herlihy been exposed on a wide variety of house record labels. Herlihy recently joined forces on Air London – one of London’s most prestigious underground labels. With a love of hard bass, his sound takes us down deep waves. You are definitely not gonna want to miss this stacked night in The Cave.

MDA’s very own, Matthew Toma aka Matthew 1:1 is taking on a new role in the dance music world. Double Vision is the name of his new project, which will be released September 9, 2012.  Toma diversified his background in hip hop to venture into the new realm of trap music.  Many refer to trap as a simple breakdown of 1/3 hip hop, 1/3 dubstep, and 1/3 dub. We asked Toma to fill us in on all things trap.

MDA: What does the term ‘trap music’ mean to you?

Toma: Well I know the true definition of ‘trap’, which came from the ‘trap house’ lifestyle that became very popular in the south with T.I., Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane being at the forefront of the music genre in the early 2000’s. It has now evolved into a genre where both street and electronic dance music cultures organically came together to make it one big sound.

MDA: How do you think trap has transformed dance music? Hip hop?

Toma: I think it has and will continue to transform the genres tremendously. It allows both cultures to come together to enjoy the music and share common interests.

MDA: What were your inspirations in developing this project?

Toma: The inspiration came from my everyday struggle with making the right and wrong decisions. We are in a spiritual war right now and this project will help define my perspective on my personal experiences with good vs evil or better yet heaven vs. hell.

MDA: Do you think this genre will withstand the evolution of music in the next 5 years?

Toma: Yes. It may evolve but the culture and energy will remain.

Double Vision will be available Sunday, September 9, 2012 via for free download and streaming. Features on the project are Tristan Wilds, FKi, Marz Leon, and Zacky T. We encourage you all to have a listen! Cheers.

This Wednesday, Maxxi Soundsystem will grace the stage at La Cave Underground Lounge. With an extensive background in the industry, Sam Watts brings a sound like no other. This UK ambassador has been praised by all the major players from Groove Armada to Hercules & Love Affair. Currently, Watts has teamed up with Danny Daze and Royston to release a new track, which will debut in the upcoming months.

Stacking up the night with deep house cat, Steve Huerta is even more reason to get out your dancing shoes. Huerta released his EP entitled Take Me Closer, one month ago, which is featured on numerous blogs, including the very reputable, Gotta Dance DirtyWe have been booking La Cave Wednesdays for the past 4 years, and this is one of our most anticipated shows!
